PhD Studentship in the School for Health
“Motivational Responses To Physical Activity And Dietary Policies: Translating Success From The Smoking Context”University of Bath – Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Applications are invited for a full-time studentship at the University of Bath (starting October 2010).

Requirements:
* A good first degree (upper second or first – or equivalent) in a Health or Social Science related discipline.
* A strong understanding of theories of behaviour change.
* Practical experience of methods of quantitative analysis.
* A desire to work towards long-term goals and ability to meet deadlines.
* Good verbal and written communication skills, and IT literate.
* Have an acceptable English qualification (e.g. GCSE, IELTS etc).

Fees and stipend:
The successful candidate will be supported for 3 years at research council rates (approximately £13,400 stipend for 2010-2011 plus UK/EU tuition fees). Overseas students outside EU are eligible to apply, however they must be able to fund the additional amount due for overseas tuition fees (please enquire for details).

Are you interested in the teaching, learning and assessment of mathematics or mathematically-based subjects at university level ? Would you like to join a vibrant and internationally renowned group at the forefront of teaching and learning developments in higher education ?

The Mathematics Education Centre (MEC, http://mec.lboro.ac.uk) has funding to offer a full-time three year studentship to a well-qualified applicant wanting to carry out research in an area related to the interests of its staff. These include: developing mathematics teaching at university level, undergraduate mathematics and mathematical identity, the development and evaluation of mathematics support, engineering mathematics - curriculum development and innovation, enhancing learning and teaching using technology. Projects are available in research groups allied to Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Pharmacy, Optometry and Psychology

Applications are invited for three year Research Studentships to be undertaken in the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University to start in July or October 2010.

The School of Life and Health Sciences is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to pursue cutting-edge research. In the 2008 RAE, 85% of the research in the School of Life and Health Sciences was ranked as being of international quality, and the School was ranked 3rd out of 61 UK University submissions to Allied Health Professions and Studies for quality and volume of research. The School currently has a research income of about £8m, with approximately 75 research students, (part time and full-time), who are registered in the School each year.

6. PhD Candidate in Land Remote Sensing
We are looking for A PhD candidate in land remote sensing
“Applying terrestrial LIDAR to measure vegetation characteristics and improve remote sensing monitoring
applications”

The Centre for Geo Information at Wageningen University (NL) is offering a PhD position for combining terrestrial LIDAR measurements and new remote sensing algorithms for monitoring of vegetation structure and biophysical variables; with focus on forest areas. The PhD student is expected to perform research on the analysis of hemispherical, multiple return terrestrial LIDAR measurements and integrate such data with improved and innovative land remote sensing approaches for calibration and validation purposes. The methodological work will entail field campaigns (also international), the analysis of three dimensional LIDAR signals to derive vegetation parameters, and the application of quantitative digital image analysis techniques. The research is part of international research collaborations.

We ask MSc degree and experiences in relevant fields such as Remote Sensing, Forestry, Ecology, Environmental Science, or Geography. Knowledge in the areas of expected methodological work and programming skills in IDL or MATLAB is preferable. The candidate should have an interest to work in a research team including international partners.

We offer a full-time PhD-position for 4 years. There will be a probationary period of 18 months.
The gross salary is € 2.042,- based on a full-time position in the first year and increases to € 2.612,- in the final year.

Location: The candidate is expected to pursue a PhD study at Wageningen University's Center of Geoinformation, Netherlands

International prize studentships for PhD research 2010 Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance

The Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (http://www.sicsa.ac.uk) is a collaboration of leading Scottish Universities whose aim is to work together to consolidate and extend Scotland's position as an international research leader in computer science and informatics. As part of this, the Scottish Graduate Academy in Informatics and Computer Science offers up to 20 international prize studentships per year to outstanding candidates who wish to study for a PhD in Scotland.

These studentships are open to excellent students from any country. There are no residency or citizenship requirements.
